Floreana Island

The island of the mysteries! Well, that was long ago, but today this island is just a magnificent visitor site in the Galápagos. Early in the morning we got up eager to go to the most famous post office in this archipelago and to continue a tradition of hundreds of years, like in the time of the whalers. We found a number of post cards to take back home and make new friends.

As part of our early morning activities we had a Zodiac ride where we saw several playful sea lions and did some bird watching for migratory species and native as well as endemic ones; among all the sea birds the blue-footed boobies were the favorite ones; there is no more impressive color than the blue feet of the boobies on the black lava. The islets are a set of rocks that have become colonies of Galápagos sea lions; this is their breeding season, a great reason to pay a visit to this place and see a number of pups guarded by the beach master as they take their morning swimming lessons.

Later on we had an outing to meet the marine life of the place. What a surprise, It was not only small colorful fish but large ones like parrot fish, Mexican hog fish, and white tipped reef sharks to mention some of them. This place is named Champion islet where besides the marine life we have a wonderful place to talk about human history and do more bird watching. While we did the Zodiac ride we could see the ever elusive Charles mocking bird that actually was the icing on the cake.

After lunch, and after a short siesta, we landed on Punta cormorant where the greater flamingos welcomed us. A walk around this lagoon is very exciting due to the behavior of these pink birds, nowhere else in the world you can get so close to them as here. Flamingos were the main attraction. At sunset, they gave us a good bye show performing their courtship calls, as they gathered in the middle of the lagoon getting ready to spend the night.
