Floreana Island

When we are in a beautiful world heritage place like the Galápagos, it is a real treat to combine a daily visit excursion with the human history of the place, water activities and nature walks; all that is what we have been going during today’s experiences.

Before breakfast we went out to one of the most historical and perhaps oldest mailing systems in Ecuador. The post office bay site let us keep on with the whalers' and buccaneers' tradition; we read the addresses of the post cards and letters, and some of us retrieved a few in order to hand-deliver them once back at home. After that we went for a Zodiac ride where we saw something that I am considering astonishing, we saw a group of five or six penguins chasing small fish along the shore line of a little islet called La Loberia. In this area we saw beautiful and gigantic Opuntia cacti also. The combination of cacti and penguins during the same outing was a memorable experience.

After breakfast we went to champion islet for water activities; this is perhaps the best snorkeling site of the entire trip, the inter-action with a couple of sea lions in their natural element was another experience of a life time. By the end of the day we had another hike, which turned out to be another highlight. The lagoon behind the beach had a great number of waders but, the main attraction was the bright pink flamingoes. During sunset we thought about how fortunate we were today after seeing the combination of all the species mentioned before in the most beautiful of settings.
