Santa Cruz Island

Amazing dragonlike land iguanas were the main highlight of the morning at Cerro Dragon on the west eastern corner of Santa Cruz Island. A beautiful sunny morning invited us to this hike which is rather long and a little hot, but it was worth it. Fifteen gorgeous adult land iguanas were sighted in this mile and a half inland trail. We even had a lonely flamingo welcoming us in the lagoon at the path’s entrance. We dry landed on the rocks and followed a rocky trail to end up on a flat area that took us to the summit of a secondary volcanic cone where we had a great view of the surroundings.

This beautiful walk was only the first activity of the morning. As we went back on board at around ten in the morning, we jumped into our wetsuits, grabbed our snorkeling gear and headed toward an islet called Guy Fawks. Beautiful underwater landscape accompanied us during our outing. Schools of colorful tropical fish and great water temperature, seventy three degrees Fahrenheit, just perfect!

After a well deserved and delectable lunch, we took a very short siesta, and at two thirty in the afternoon the action had started again. By the time we were resting, the Islander had taken us around the corner and we anchored at a place called Venice, still on Santa Cruz Island shoreline. We kayaked and Zodiac rode around this area, which is surrounded by mangrove trees. We had the best of the afternoons. We traveled all the time with beautiful and peaceful sea turtles and baby white tipped and black tipped sharks. This protected cove is packed with wilderness that made our afternoon another unforgettable one in paradise.
