Urbina Bay and Punta Moreno

Urbina Bay and Punta Moreno are located in the south-western side of Isabela Island. Because of their remote location, we had the privilege to be the only souls around this area today and feel the pulse and the energy emanating from the volcanoes and from the abounding wild life.

Our solitude in the area was mainly due to the fact that small vessels can’t cover long distances, not even at night time traveling, so it is a huge advantage to be in a ship like ours with all the comfort and the capability to cover long distances.

While visiting both areas, we had the chance to do what we called “moments of silence.” This is the perfect way to identify the natural sounds in the surroundings and to let the finches and mockingbirds entertain us with their symphony of songs. The beautiful melodies made us feel a stronger connection with the Galápagos and realize how important this beautiful archipelago is.

In the afternoon we had a chance to walk over a young lava field. Its roughness was only an undercover to the overwhelming fact that life exists everywhere. When flamingoes came into sight, we realized that there were natural water-connected lagoons keeping safe a huge array of plants and birds.

By the end of the day we found ourselves “panga riding” along the dramatic coastline, observing the healthy population of penguins, sea lions, flagless cormorants and blue-footed boobies that regularly inhabit this rocky area.

As we returned to the ship, we all enjoyed the sunset and had the common thought of how fortunate we are to witness such beautiful, natural events.
