Santa Cruz Island

Today was a Giant Land Tortoise day. The morning outing was to visit the Rearing Centre for the Galápagos Giant Land Tortoises. This program is held by the Galápagos National Park Service with the help of the Charles Darwin Research Station. Land tortoises were very much affected by human activities since the sixteenth century and they were almost all wiped out of the face of this planet. We are trying to restore the original numbers as well as their natural habitat that has been affected by introduced animals and plants. We had lunch at the highlands and the afternoon outing was a nice stroll in the greenery up in the highlands of Santa Cruz. We enjoyed very much getting to know the different species of plants in the higher elevations of the island. Some of us shopped in Puerto Ayora after we came back from the highlands and at the end of this great day, we had a spectacular dinner. Another beautiful day in paradise.
