Isabela and Fernandina Island

We sailed to the northern tip of Isabela, an island that could be called “our baby island,” since its age is approximately three hundred thousand years only! It is also one of our jewels in the Galápagos, simply because there is no other place like this on earth. Our morning began with a call “dolphins, dolphins!” We all came outside and a myriad of common dolphins were jumping, breaching and doing acrobatic maneuvers that we can only dream of. We all enjoyed a nice view of an “out-of-this world landscape” when we passed along the majestic Ecuador Volcano.

After breakfast, all the guests boarded the Zodiacs to explore the waters along the northern coastline of Isabela. Quite a few giant sun fish or Mola mola were swimming around our Zodiacs and a huge manta ray appeared and swam for a while in front of the Zodiacs. For the bird-watchers, the morning seemed very productive as well. Dozens of blue-footed and Nazca boobies, pelicans and a few penguins were observed posing on the rocks.

The afternoon was dedicated completely to the island of Fernandina. A total of three groups ended up taking the option to walk over a huge lava field that gave us a unique “moonscape” view. By the end, all of our guests returned to the ship with big smiles on their faces. Fernandina, the most pristine island in the Galápagos, has thousands of marine iguanas, hundreds of sea lions and quite a few dozen of flightless cormorants that were nesting. Once we got to the end of the trail, we observed the volcanoes from the neighbor island, Isabela. The sunset behind the western flank of Fernandina was definitely something to remember…
