Laggan Locks to Banavie near Fort William
The dampish air doesn’t deter our kayakers from their early morning trip through Laggan Avenue to Loch Oich. Meanwhile everbody else dines on breakfast during our sail across Loch Lochy. Once back in a man made section of the canal, the kayakers get back onto the ship and the cyclists get off to cycle to Banavie. Steve prepares us for our visit in the afternoon to Glencoe by giving us a fascinating account of the history leading up to the massacre of Glencoe.
But before the afternoons excursion we come to one of the highlights of our trip through the Caledonian Canal: the sail down Neptune’s staircase. These 8 locks lower the water level by 21 meters over the space of 500 meters.
After lunch a coach takes us to Glencoe – which can’t be beaten on a day like this. The mist has lifted to reveal blue skies with the occasional clouds, and the sharp ridges of the mountains tower above us. And what could be better than a golden eagle flying above us, well, not one but two of them glide on the thermals above our heads. Glorious! We have a great time checking out the Glencoe visitor centre and some of us join Steve for a short walk to a ruin.
Back at the ship, we have some time to freshen up before recap and dinner and then take in the evenings rays of sunshine before retiring for the night.
