Armadale Castle, the Cuillins & Dunvegan Castle

We sailed from Rùm to Armadale early in the morning, to visit Armadale Castle ruin, gardens and the Museum of the Isles. The Museum tells us about the history of the islands and sums up a lot of the history we came across on our trip on board the Lord of the Glens. It’s an amazing museum – so are the gardens, with herbaceous borders, mature trees and a pond garden. The castle ruins date back to the 18th and 19th century.

After lunch some of us went off to scale the heights of the Cuillins, well, 1000 ft was quite enough! We walked a damp 5 miles in stunning scenery with views of the Red and Black Cuillins.

The other destination to Dunvegan Castle and Gardens, the home of the Clan Chief of the MacLeods of Dunvegan. Stories of Fairy Flags and the likes abound; these gardens are also stunning.

Straight after our return to the Lord of the Glens, the ship sailed off to Inverie on the Knoydart Peninsula. This community is very remote, you can only get here by ship or on foot, as it is not connected to the road network of Britain. After dinner most of us went to the pub, the Old Forge Inn, officially the remotest pub on the British Mainland.  You could even get the T-shirt!
