Tobermory, Isle of Mull
Torosay Castle lies about forty-five minutes from Tobermory, the beautiful harbor town near the northeast corner of Mull. This nineteenth century home is steeped in the personal histories of local people who reflect the events of the greater outside world. Jacquetta James showed us through the home that she and her predecessors and succors have occupied for five generations. A walk through the varied and magnificent gardens finished our visit. On the way home, a highland cow gave us a close-up look, as a grey heron landed just a few feet away.
Tobermory, the main settlement on Mull, is a delightful spot. Various shops (chocolate being the most popular), hikes of differing lengths (including a walk to a “Stevenson” lighthouse) and wonderful scenery make this well-protected anchorage a favorite destination for boaters from throughout the region.
Wings Over Mull is dedicated to rehabilitating raptors and to educating people about these magnificent birds. Sue and Richard Dewar, along with their friends the Harris hawk, snowy owl, peregrine falcon, barn owl and tawny owl inspired us with their program after dinner.
