Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Isle of Eigg and on to Inverie

Today was one of those very special West Coast days. We had bright sunshine all day with enough clouds to make the scenery look interesting.

The morning was spent in Tobermory, where we could either join David Barnes on a hike along the bay or Konia on a photographic tour of Tobermory. This also left time for exploring the shops and the Isle of Mull Museum.

Come lunch time we sailed to one of the Small Isles, the Isle of Eigg. This island has had a very turbulent history, with the strong women of Eigg murdering St. Donan and his followers in the 7th century and some MacLeods from neighboring Skye killing the entire population a few centuries later. Nowadays Eigg is a tranquil and beautiful island, owned and run by the Isle of Eigg Trust, which bought out the island in 1996.

Again we had several activities to choose from, either a nature hike with Rick Atkinson, a wee tour of the island on a mini bus with Iris Barry or a photographic walk to the former landowners lodge with its garden. And then there was the sea to go for a paddle in – heaven is called Scotland’s west today.

After a gorgeous sail to Inverie and dinner, many of us went on a pilgrimage to the remotest pub on the mainland of Britain – the Old Forge Inn. This is the fabulous hub of this small community that can only be reached by boat or on foot – and either way we can buy the Inns t-shirt to show where we’ve been before we return to our cozy ship for the night.
