Villamil and Sierra Negra Volcano

What an exiting day today has been. Early in the morning, the power walkers headed to Puerto Villamil dock, and I was luckily selected to guide the group to Sierra Negra Volcano. We knew that soon the adventurous “do it all” guests would take over this beautiful town, so off we went on a 1-hour ride as far up as the pick-up truck could take us. We left the trucks at 3000 feet, and with backpacks, water and enough enthusiastic energy to bust us up to Sierra Negra’s rim, the second largest caldera in the world. We reached it in 40 minutes, and there it was: a monumentally breathtaking view. The power of the volcano could only be imagined, and the birds, plants and breeze our only companions.

We continued along the rim to Volcan Chico, our goal, where fumaroles and lava flows were the attraction, however an unexpected landscape as we sit: blue sky, tranquillity. I mesmerize about many things, also about you, my reader, wherever you are, so far from us here. I would like to give you a message: look at this picture. These are our guests who made it to the top, the dreamers who converted the intangible Galápagos dream (for many) into a reality. We are in the Enchanted Islands many miles away from you. Notice the sweat? Don’t miss this.

Back down in the town, we visited the famous Galápagos tortoises and the rearing centre followed by a nice walk in Puerto Villamil, where we met at the dock to board the Islander for our next adventure. Weighing anchor, we sail away from Isabela after having become part of her human history here in the Galápagos. We have had a glimpse of time; today it is ours, I wonder who will be next…
