Isla Española

We started our day surfing on board our Zodiacs over big waves, which are common at this site. Everyone was very excited about the walk, since this is the oldest island, has the longest trail, and is one of the most beautiful sites in the GNP (Galápagos National Park).

Since the very beginning we were welcomed by unique animals, found only on this Island and nowhere else on earth, such as Española mockingbirds, Española lava Lizards, marine Iguanas. We also saw Nazca boobies, and many different kinds of sea birds and land birds, such as galápagos doves, large cactus finch, warbler and small ground finch and many others.

It was almost half way, the sun was very intense, and from the distance we could hear the waves crashing against the rocks. We finally arrived to a beautiful Geological formation known as the Blow Hole; for our surprise we were at the exact time of day to enjoy this Natural event, when the waves rolled in, and due to pressure within the fissure produced a huge splash of sea water in the air. After the walk we came back to the National Geographic Polaris, for a delicious Ecuadorian lunch, then had a nap and got ready for the afternoons activities. What an amazing morning!

In the afternoon some guests headed for deep water snorkeling, some took the glass bottom boat, and the rest opted for snorkeling lessons at the beach to be prepared for activities for the rest of the week. Some people explored the costal area on board our kayaks. After seeing lots of fish, and learning water skills, people came back to the beach to talk about their experiences of the day. Several of our guests even had time to walk along the beach, and take many pictures of the most common marine mammal in the Galápagos, the famous sea lions.

When everyone was getting ready to go to bed, our guests ended up on the sky deck to observe the most prominent Southern Hemisphere Constellations, and some of the Northern Hemisphere ones. After this presentation everyone was very happy and tired and ready to have sweet dreams. This day will stay in our minds forever.
