South Atlantic, East of Tierra del Fuego

After a Halloween celebration last night, filled with ghouls and goblins, we awoke this morning on the last leg of our journey – returning to Ushuaia, on the island of Tierra del Fuego, where our voyage began. The sharp winds and boisterous seas that have accompanied us since South Georgia continued, but gradually calmed down as the day progressed, and a passing shower left a distinctly warming sunshine in its wake.

While we were on South Georgia we picked up Swedish photographer Göran Ehlme, who has spent the past few weeks assisting National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen on a magazine story. Today he shared some of his astonishing images and experiences, particularly his pioneering work photographing wild walrus and leopard seals underwater.

Finally, in the evening, the National Geographic Endeavour approached the southern tip of South America, the sea settled down, and we had the traditional, if bittersweet, Captain’s farewell dinner. Afterwards, we gathered in the Lounge for the “Laptop Gallery,” with several dozen computers set up on every horizontal surface. On each, guests displayed their favorite pictures from this diverse and memorable trip, providing a chance for us to look back on all the places we have visited over the past two weeks. It was fascinating to see how different people saw the same subjects in such varied and creative ways.

Within a few hours we will meet a pilot boat at the entrance to the Beagle Channel.
