Petermann Island

On Christmas Day, many households enjoy their families, gaily wrapped gifts, and special dinners. Anticipation runs high and excitement fills the air. Here aboard the National Geographic Endeavour our Christmas Day has brought a host of treasures.

Blue skies and warm weather highlighted our walks on Petermann Island. The backdrop of snow-frosted peaks added luster to a kayak excursion along the shore. Our ship shouldered pack ice aside as we pushed southwards while watching crabeater and Weddell seals on ice floes. An unexpected stop at a new site capped our afternoon. We cruised in the Zodiacs amid endless varieties of icebergs ranging from towering white castles to delicately carved crystal sea nymphs.

Our Christmas day brings no red coated elves, nor reindeer. But we enjoy the pleasure of good company and fine friends. The grandeur that is Antarctica surrounds us and embraces us while the day provides a feast for the senses and leaves us sated. Our day was filled with all the riches of Christmas!
