Copenhagen, Denmark
Denmark is certainly a country that appreciates art, and examples of it abound in this vibrant city of almost 2 million people. Our morning visit to Rosenborg Castle exposed us to some of the paintings, sculpture, and decorative styles of the Renaissance, Rococo, and Baroque influences that found their way into this city. Hardly surprising that such styles should find a place here, since for centuries Copenhagen has been a major trading centre. In the afternoon, those who explored the Carlsberg Glyptothek were treated to further treasures of the art world, where sculptures from the past 3500 years share gallery space with paintings from the current century. And the displays are by no means confined to formal museums: the work pictured here is entitled “Dragon Flower” and was erected in an urban courtyard in 2001. This bouquet of giant, inflated flowers sprawls gaudily on the cobblestones, brightening even a rainy day.
