Floreana Island
We have an extremely energetic group of guests this week on board the National Geographic Endeavour, so as expected, many are ready for the early visit to Post Office Bay. They had all been briefed about this place and its relevance in a chapter of the human history of the Galápagos. The barrel has been a holder of many secrets and no fewer amounts of intrigues. Exalting passions have arisen here and greedy ones as well, making these islands figure among the very few locations in the world where the mixing of natural and human can co-exist.
The recitation of the addresses written on the post cards was a nice obligation that provided us with exciting moments. When our guests found addresses nearby their home places, picking a post card to hand deliver became a very important – and amusing – moment. We couldn’t help but think of all the times of merriment and hope old seafarers shared here….
The temperature of the water went down to “invigorating” levels, but no matter how chilly it felt the experience was enrapturing; unreal with so many fish surrounding us. Then in no time we all were sitting in the Zodiacs ready to circumnavigate the satellite island of Champion, where we were expecting to find the Charles’ mockingbird. (By the way, we did find several.)
After lunch and a good nap, some of us went to enjoy the green beach at Punta Cormorant, while others had a very stimulating kayak session. Walking on sand made of green crystals was cool - yet when sunny, the beach could turn into an oven - and after an hour of exploration we started inland on the proper trail that led us to see flamingos and some interesting plants of this location.
