San Cristobal Island
We are ending another expedition in the magical Galápagos Islands. The last destination on our itinerary is San Cristobal Island, the second oldest island of the archipelago. This island has many highlights and today we visited two of these.
In the morning we landed at Punta Pitt for a long walk inland to climb an old volcano. Here the view is stunning; you have cliffs and valleys and peaks and, from the top, the best view of the surrounding sea and land. At the end of this path there is a small colony of red-footed boobies, perching on bushes and cliffs as well as the red carpet weeds decorating the landscape.
Once we came back from the walk we stayed at the beach photographing and swimming and snorkeling. This brown beach has a colony of sea lions; most of them are young, less than two-years-old, and they are very playful. The temperature was nice and the sun was shining with a cool breeze, the result of the Humboldt Current that bathes the Galápagos Islands this time of year.
In the afternoon we were heading to the famous Kicker Rock for snorkeling when we suddenly spotted a humpback whale in the distance and eventually we had it very close!
Later we reached the snorkeling site and it was amazing. There were schools of Galápagos sharks and rays as well as sea turtles!
We couldn’t have had a better ending to the trip.
