Española Island

Our first full day in the Galápagos was spent on the gorgeous southern island of Española. This island is the oldest in the archipelago and is home to thousands of different species of land and sea birds. All of them make Española Island a paradise for wildlife and for wildlife observers.

Our day started with a visit to Punta Suarez on the north side of the island. Here we snorkeled and had the opportunity to see lots of tropical fish, including stingrays and king angel fish. But the highlight was the Galápagos sea lions. Later we disembarked at the beach for a walk along the sea lion colony. The beach was a dream place; baby sea lions played in the surf, and the white sand and turquoise water were just the perfect ingredients for a morning in paradise.

In the afternoon we repositioned the ship for our next adventure, a long walk to explore the seabird colony. This place is home to a large colony of Nazca boobies. At this time you can find them nesting and some pairs have fluffy white chicks. As we explored the shoreline we met many marine iguanas sunbathing and showing the typical breeding colors. This place is also home the endemic Española lava lizards.

It was a real treat visiting this island – it certainly is a jewel!
