Lübeck, Germany
Our morning began today with a champagne toast during a navigation around Lübeck in the canals of the Trave River. Lübeck is the largest port on the Baltic Sea, which seemed obvious from the vast amount and variety of ships that laced the canal walls. The morning was picturesque and bustling with life, and the excursion along the river provided an excellent vantage point to witness the varied activities. The sunshine and warm weather seemed to bring everyone outside to take advantage of such a beautiful Saturday. Dogs led their owners along the boardwalk, rowers glided across the water with their paddles cutting in and out of the river in perfect unison, ducks enjoyed a free handout of bread thrown from a passerby crossing a bridge while another man sat lazily on the wall with a fishing pole in his hand, hoping for a fresh catch.
As we traveled further up the canal, the towers of St. Mary’s Cathedral rose so high above the surrounding buildings that they seemed to almost pierce the sky. The gothic brick architecture and narrow streets added to the medieval atmosphere of this once Neolithic region. We explored the town and soaked in the local culture throughout the day and finally returned to the ship by Zodiac, which was the first of many adventures yet to come on our expedition of the Baltic Sea. Once back on board, the Captain officially welcomed us aboard the National Geographic Endeavour with cocktails and great enthusiasm for the adventure that waits ahead of us.
