Davis Strait

We spent the night traveling a vast and quiet sea, gliding over the face of the Davis Strait that separates Baffin Island from our next destination – Greenland – where we will arrive tomorrow morning. Dawn came slowly, with only the wisps of fog and a gentle roll reminded us that we are indeed at sea, accompanied by the occasional Fulmar, a gliding seabird cousin of the albatross.

Our day was quiet after the many landings and explorations of the past few days, a good time to catch up on reading, sleep, or editing pictures. In addition, the naturalist staff offered more in-depth information on subjects related to the North; Rupert Pilkington gave a detailed review of the life history of polar bears and the increasing challenges that confront them, while National Geographic explorer Eric Hansen described his own challenges in reaching the North Pole during the summer of 2006.

Steve Maclean also offered us a presentation and hosted a discussion of the issues surrounding Global Warming, whose effects are at their most pronounced in this part of the world.

We crossed the Arctic Circle during the day, an event celebrated in the late afternoon by a back-deck hot dog and beer party, a sort of spontaneous PolarFest. The air was surprisingly warm, almost windless, as we sailed toward the Greenland ice.
