Española Island

The morning commenced with a calm ocean and transparent waters that were inviting us all to begin our activities of the day. So we began with an outstanding kayaking expedition along the rocky shoreline. Following this relaxing paddle moment, we continued with our explorations – this time, underwater at Gardner Islet. There, the snorkelers were able to enjoy somewhat chilly water with hundreds of fish and millions of all sorts of invertebrates. Later on while visiting the almost 1 km of white sand beach, we counted as many as 820 sea lions, and all of them were sl'seeping!

The morning's visit to Gardner Bay went on fulfilling our expectations. Now it was just a matter of waiting until our last adventure on the Galápagos takes place; walking on Punta Suarez on the western side of Espanola.

It was to our great surprise to find that due to the strong rain and an extra high tide, the trail was flooded in certain areas. It was really wonderful to experience something very different during this hike, and to observe that the lava lizards are doing very well, as well are the marine iguanas which are nesting. We found a Galápagos racer snake with a recent meal in its belly and the Nazca boobies are still around taking care of their chicks.

But what really blew our minds was seeing the very first albatross of the season flying around and over our heads, saying: “Hey you, there! We’re back, remember it's the beginning of the equinox, so it is our time to return…”

We witnessed the opening of another chapter of this marvelous book called The Galápagos Islands.
