Española Island

Our last full day on the Galápagos Islands took us to the oldest geological formation. This Island has a lot to offer to our visitors, most of the fauna we can see here is endemic not only to Galápagos also endemic to Española.

Within “The Enchanted Islands” as they were known for centuries, a natural phenomenon occurs during the dry season, when cold waters from the Antarctic bathe the archipelago. Some of the islands tend to disappear with mist almost to the sea level; this natural was witnessed very early in the morning in Gardener Bay. We are in transition between seasons.

Most of our guests were wondering when the best time is to come here, and they where so surprised to know that we sail all year round in these magical waters; most of the Galápagos fauna is endemic to this unique place, so there is no reason to migrate to an unknown world.

There are only a few places on earth where reptiles are still dominant, and in Galápagos these creatures still prevail. From the first day to the last day our guests were very surprised to see this particular curiosity.

We have seven kinds of marine iguanas, eleven kinds of giant tortoises, two kind of land iguanas and several kinds of lava lizards. And the list is longer. Our guest have seen only a few of these species, and the main reason is because one week is not enough to visit all of them, and the second reason is because a majority of locations are closed to most visitors. Many Galápagos animal habitats were destroyed by introduced species, and they are in a recuperation process until we reach a safe level of stasis.

In the afternoon we landed at Pta Suarez. The largest of the lava lizards were everywhere, the Christmas marine iguanas were sun bathing in the coastal area, the blow hole was splashing water vapor in all directions, and the largest endemic sea bird of Galápagos was present, the Waved Albatross. All of these experiences contribute in making this island one of the most visited in Galápagos.

With good memories all of our guest are happy and ready to go back home.
