Bartolomé & Santiago Islands

The morning appeared still, accompanied by a pleasant temperature; it was still somehow dark and by six in the morning the first sun rays parted the sky, revealing the dramatic contours of Bartolomé Island. We performed a dry landing, and soon after our exploration to the summit of this middle aged volcano started. Even though this was not an animal sighting island, it still gave us lots of great memories.

In the mid morning, a sensational snorkeling session was planned. Once in the water we were accompanied by some sharks and also some penguins. The temperature of the water continued to be pleasant and the experience was great.

The swimming and snorkeling dragged lots of energy out of our bodies; but fortunately today the typical Ecuadorian lunch was prepared and it was plentiful, so we satisfied our hunger.

The afternoon navigation was delightful with the radiance of the sun creating an intense glare on the ocean’s surface. Our destination was Santiago Island and we were to be exploring Puerto Egas on the western side of the island.

A soft breeze together with a shade, the result of an opportune cloud stationed over our heads, made our walk very pleasurable along the shore line. Several marine iguanas were eating, the low tide having exposed the rocks covered with green algae. Some oystercatchers were passing by noisily back and forth. At the end of the path, we found four fur seals resting on the shelves formed on the rocky shoreline.

For our delight, we found a sphinx moth pollinating the welcoming white flowers of the abundant shore petunias present there. Late in the afternoon we were all bathed with a mellow yellow light coming from the already setting sun. The day came to an end, but the memories are already written deep in our hearts. Good day.
