Isabela & Fernandina Island

We are in the middle of our Galápagos experience and so far…so GREAT! We have been able to witness great Islands and locations full of wildlife, and today seems to be just as good as the other days...actually let me rephrase it, it is better!

We were navigating during the morning along the northern coast of Isabela Island; a group of common dolphins were encountered and photographed along the way. They were in the hundreds. Their bodies were shown fully in the air when each one of them jumped to show us how well they were performing acrobatic pirouettes. It was a feast to the eyes to see such a magnificent landscape adorned with little jumping creatures all over the place!

Right after breakfast the crossing of the equator line attracted a lot of visitors to the ship’s bridge to see the famous line that crossed not only mainland Ecuador but the Galápagos Islands as well.

Some people saw the line, others said they felt the “bump” but what ever it was, we did it. We crossed the line and became officially “shellbacks.”

Our Zodiac cruise was timed perfectly with an ocean creature known as Mola mola. It showed us all of its immense body as we were exploring Punta Vicente Roca. Sea turtles, sea lions, penguins and flightless cormorants made their appearance here and there as well making it difficult to focus in only one creature at the time.

During the afternoon, the visit to Fernandina Island was what we could call perfect! This is the most unspoiled area in all of Galápagos, and we could see that with our own eyes. Hundreds of marine iguanas were basking on the rocks and beaches, while the sea lions, cormorants and some migratory birds were found all along the trail.

Even though there was some haze on the air, Fernandina volcano (also known as “La Cumbre”) showed us its imposing flanks full of dark lava flows, as a remainder of the youth of the island and constant possibilities of a volcanic eruption one of these days…
