Floreana Island

A beautiful morning, not too cold, not too warm, announcing the transition from the warm-rainy season to the dry-cold season. Despite Galápagos’ position right on the equator, seasons are well marked due to the ocean currents that bathe the archipelago. Our day began with an early morning visit to Post Office bay, a historical spot where we learned about the days when Galápagos was visited by whalers and pirates. At that time, those willing to send mail back to Europe counted on the good will of other sailors to deliver their messages. Today our explorers carry on with the tradition, leaving their postcards and collecting those addressed to places nearby their homes.

Later in the morning we had a chance to try one of the best snorkeling spots in the archipelago, Champion Island. This is home to dozens of playful sea lions, who are as curious about us as we are about them. We also had a chance to kayak or go on a Zodiac cruise in search of the elusive Floreana Mocking bird, a rare bird with a population smaller than 150 individuals.

In the afternoon, a walk around Punta Cormorant was the perfect opportunity for close views of flamingos, white cheeked pintail ducks and the sea turtles nesting site, which was where we ended. It was another succesful day of not only the natural side of the Galápagos but its historical elements as well.
