Española Island

This morning, numerous sea lions resting on the white sandy beach at Gardner Bay provided us with good company and excellent entertainment. Once again it was confirmed that good things happen often on these magical islands. The calmness expressed by the animals, made a great impact on our souls. The whole time we visited the beach we felt at peace.

The visit to Punta Suarez in the afternoon was exquisite for we were surrounded by hundreds of passing boobies and tropical birds. As we stumbled over the rocky trail exercising and checking what was going on, on the ground, dozens of lava lizards were scampering all around and between our feet. We had the fine opportunity to enjoy the very first flight of a baby swallow tailed gull. We reached an impressive blow hole, which was showing such a force with each incoming wave, that we felt insignificant and subdued in front of nature’s display. The most moving moment however, was just after we had witnessed an albatross gracefully take off from the cliff; we came upon an egg of this species. Everyone had thought it was abandoned, but all of the sudden it came to life. We could see the tiny chick pecking to emerge from the egg. It was the miracle of a new living entity, claiming its right to participate in the great contest called the perpetuation of the species.

We have been alternately struck with excitement and awe every passing minute of this week’s trip, and the Galápagos have shown us that. Once we return to our own homes it is important that we all remember to focus more on the protection of our own “house,” which nowadays is a rather disheveled place we call Earth.
