Floreana Island

At 0530 in the morning, after a somewhat bumpy and windy night, the National Geographic Islander slowed her speed and approached the Island of Floreana. Some early risers were already on the upper deck contemplating the beautiful contours of the island. It seemed as though no one was interested in visiting Post Office barrel, but as the disembarkation time came everyone was there; ready to reenact the ceremony that has taken place in this little bay for over 200 hundred years. Pleasant weather accompanied us and our guests were so excited that some took as many as a dozen postcards to be delivered by hand, as the tradition goes.

Later on, after breakfast we had a very successful Zodiac ride around Champion Islet where we were delighted by the presence of no less than ten Charles mockingbirds. This was followed by an invigorating snorkel with the sea lions. While we snorkeled we were surrounded by many colorful fish that created an incredible environment comparable to a giant natural kaleidoscope.

In the afternoon, Punta Cormorán sealed the day with one of the most remarkable experiences of the week. Flamingos took flight almost directly over our heads. We experience a thrill as we admired their elegance and beautiful colors. We also watched at least one hundred cow nosed golden rays courting at the site known as “the flour beach” as sharks and turtles were swimming nearby.

Floreana, the island remembered most for the mysterious disappearances of some of its inhabitants during the 1930’s, reminded us that this island will always be remarkable for its natural history as well.
