Western Isabela Island

Heading down towards the central most volcano of Isabela Island we had a smooth navigation on a bright morning with a stunning blue sky. The contour of Alcedo volcano stands a few miles inshore with only 4500 feet above sea level, yet its massive base makes it really impressive.

Upon arrival we had an encounter with hundreds of finches flying all around the existing nesting area for sea turtles in the upper beach of Urvina Bay. This impressive location was the subject of an uplifting event in 1954 and today being all covered with vegetation of the dry forest zone, is a roosting place for land iguanas of exquisite colors. Several of these ancient reptiles accompanied us along our exploration of the trail of the Galápagos National Park.

One of the most emotive moments came late in the morning when we were getting ready to leave for our next destination. A pod of no less than 200 bottled nosed dolphins got close to the beach. Immediately we boarded the Zodiacs and proceeded to observe them, which was an elating experience.

When we arrived to Tagus Cove in the afternoon, everyone on board was ready to begin the activities which provided several options. We were eager to do them all, even though that would have been impossible. Yet, the kayaking, the snorkeling and the hiking found their places. Those who were kayaking did see many penguins, and so close… boobies, marine iguanas and sea turtles everywhere!

The hike provided us with a wonderful view, where we had an overwhelming perspective of Darwin Lagoon, a body of hyper saline water that dominates the landscape. Several frigate birds were flying over us high in the sky. For us, they gave a sensation of freedom that was a fine touch, like a blessing at the end of our day with nature.
