Española Island

The Galápagos Islands are considered a laboratory of evolution. By visiting the islands you can experience firsthand how species have adapted to specific conditions of the archipelago, or to one island, or even to an area on an island.

Today on Española we saw many species that are unique to this island: The Española mockingbird, the Española lava lizard, and the Española Racer. We met as well the colorful marine iguana, which is an endemic subspecies.

In the morning we had some relaxing time at Gardner Bay. We shared this beautiful beach with hundreds of Galápagos sea lions. The day was sunny and the beach was surrounded with turquoise waters with a great visibility, which was great for us as we got to experience our first deep water snorkeling, which was accompanied by sharks, rays, and all different species of fish.

In the afternoon we explored Punta Suarez. A boulder’s hike took us through nesting sites of Nazca bobbies, we found many very young chicks, some of them were days old! The Galápagos hawk was spotted on the highest rock of the area and around him swallowed tail gulls were flying making of the scene a very active one!

At the end of the hike we sat on the rocks to experience the beauty of the islands. We enjoyed the songs of different birds, the sea lions barking and the colors of the sky with a fast Ecuadorian sunset… We saw the best of this unique piece of world, Española Island.
