Bartolomé Island
It all started with an optional wake up call for the most intrepid climbers that wanted to experience a place that is not too far from the moon both in distance and appearance. The sun was starting to rise from the east above the water as the adventurers landed and began to climb. 376 wooden steps take you right to the peak of this picturesque place; the elevation is very dry, therefore one can witness the remote appearance of plants that appropriately deserve the name of pioneers.
Incredible volcanic features surround the island with pride and without speaking tell us about the beginning of life on our planet. Lizards come across our way as one of the very few animals that can resist the inhospitable conditions presented to them.
The most incredible part of this place is the top from which you can view other islands, the waters around it and a landmark rock formation known as the “pinnacle”. Later after breakfast we headed for more options: walking along the beach, snorkeling with seal lions and penguins, or just looking at wildlife without getting wet from the comfort of a glass bottom boat.
With the sun above our heads and lunch to be served we headed for our next destination, the island of Santiago. There with no less spectacular scenery we disembarked with our water lovers for snorkeling and others that simply wanted to experience the beauty of this black beach full of sea lions and other creatures.
Later the hikers anxious for more adventures landed and got ready to take a walk along the shore of Puerto Egas. There is an incredible combination of wildlife here, including the Galápagos fur sea lions that prefer more rocky places than their cousins who favor the beach. The tide pools of this place offer a galaxy of creatures like sea anemones, tiny crabs, snails, fish and the bigger animals that are their predators. This is an excellent place for the observeration of vagrants and other resident birds like herons oystercatchers, diving boobies, frigates, and brown pelicans. Turtles were seen poking their heads out of the water to delight the visitors of these latitudes. Iguanas were at every step immobile as if they had been carved out of the rocks.
With all these amazing sightings and experiences in our memories we headed back on board with satisfaction and contentment for such a great day on a place like no other on earth.
