Isabela & Fernandina Islands

After an overnight navigation on board National Geographic Polaris, we woke up to a cloudy sunrise over the spectacular views of the Western volcanoes of the Galápagos. We started our morning adventures circumnavigating Roca Redonda, the remaining tip of a huge volcano. Hundreds of sea birds, the only inhabitants of this steep rock away from the coasts of Isabela, were buzzing around this formation. A small pod of bottle-nosed dolphins were feeding themselves around the rock too!

We headed back towards Isabela Island, in order to explore its rocky coast in our Zodiacs. Everybody was fascinated not only because of the beauty of the scenery, but also because of the explosion of life once you have a closer look. Snorkeling was the best of the week so far.

To complete this amazing day we had an afternoon walk on the youngest and also pristine island of Fernandina, one of the jewels in the crown. We enjoyed the company of several young iguanas which sunbathed together with fully grown on the dark lava fields of Punta Espinoza. Sunset was spectacular behind the shield volcano of magnificent Fernandina.
