Cerro Dragon & Sombrero Chino

A sunny morning and calm seas with just a slight and gentle breeze: the perfect inviting conditions for our morning visit to Cerro Dragon on the northern shore of Santa Cruz Island. Once on land however, we were able to feel the strength of the equatorial sun heating the basaltic rocks; also the sunlight created a halo-like illusion when passing through the spines of the prickly pear cacti, lighting each individual plant and increasing our delight.

We were expecting several land iguanas but they were on vacation. Nevertheless we found there some of these ancient looking lizards which parsimoniously allowed us to do what we went for; take exceptional photos! With all and this though, the expended time on this trail was more than gratifying. We have an underwater experience still to come and as fast as possible we were suited up carrying the snorkeling gear for such an expedition.

It was glorious. Just floating into this three dimensional environment surrounded by totally innocent fish and extremely curious sea lions is simply more than what anyone ever expects. We enjoyed the cushion sea stars as well as the stunning Mulliner’s sea slugs with their intense blue color. After the blessings given by Mother Nature and being extremely hungry; we went to lunch.

The afternoon came way too soon and after an interesting photographic workshop, the different groups went for their respective activities. The snorkelers had an outstanding time in this fascinating island. On the other hand, the kayakers experienced a somehow strong wind accompanied by close waves which help them to developed good paddling skills. While this happened, some other guests spent time at the beach where sea lions were totally oblivious to their presence becoming excellent models.

The dramatic changes of scenery, the constant presence of friendly animals, the intimate relation everyone achieved with nature, has made of today one of the most productive days of our week.
