Floreana Island
The morning presented itself calm and peaceful; the water surrounding Post Office Bay was perfect for an early morning visit, so we did. Our visit gave us a lot of merry moments, since the guests were expecting to hear the naturalist announce the name of their town or city written on the post cards dropped by past visitors. The post card would give the perfect excuse for our guests to hand deliver it to its destination, and to meet new friends with common interests. This has been the same tradition that for centuries, has been maintained by visitors to the Galápagos. The surrounding areas are also full of mysteries and legends from the past - long ago forgotten objects from unsuccessful attempts to establish in this location could be found near the path.
At mid morning we engaged a very exciting snorkeling expedition in rather unexpected warm waters with crystal clear visibility. It was a dreamlike experience! It was almost as if we were transported to a different dimension where we were able to float surrounded by thousands of multicolored fish.
The temperature of the water today makes us think of a strong possibility of an incoming ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation). If that is correct, the islands will face another hard experience regarding their fauna, especially the coastal communities. On the other hand, the flora will have an outstanding time of extreme greenery. This is not a fact, but a possibility due the atmospheric indicators.
Our kayaking outing gave us a great chance to be in the presence of sea turtles coming very close to the small crafts, as well as the already common experience of being tailed by sea lions.
The afternoon visit to Punta Cormoran was full of surprises. We had the splendor of the sun bathing the slopes of the parasitic cones that are scattered all around, producing amazing light effects that gave joy to our souls. We saw flamingos, but there weren’t many at the lagoon. Even though, seeing them feeding and taking short flights was good enough for us to understand once again the miracle of life!
