Isabela & Fernandina
“One more day in the paradise started.”
A place like no other in the Galápagos is Roca Redonda with its active submarine volcano that goes 4000 feet deep, rich with the upwelling of Cromwell, a cold underwater current.
This glorious morning we had a celebration of the equatorial line crossing after an early wakeup. Guests showed a lot of enthusiasm while pointing out every single species of bird, and appreciated the geology of the area with their knowledge.
We had the first killer whale sighting of the year! It happened right in the middle of our Equator line celebration. A pod of three orcas that were probably feeding on ocean sunfish. And we can not soon forget those unique fishes which were the highlight of our Zodiac ride!
After the ride we were snorkeling among sea turtles, flightless cormorants and Galápagos penguins feeding in these phytoplankton rich waters.
In the afternoon we headed for Fernandina (Punta Espinosa), the most pristine island in the Galápagos. In less than a mile of walking, we found a lot of wildlife and even observed animal nesting behaviors, with marine iguanas and flightless cormorants nesting along the shores of this recent uplift point.
The night entertainment was great; we had birthday celebrations for two of our guests followed by Charles Darwin’s birthday song. We had a cake for Varun, one for Jennifer, and one for Darwin as well.
