Española Island

The morning was clear, which promised us a great day! The island is still green due to the rain, and as a result it is shaping up to be a good year for all kinds of living things. It's time to gain a little more knowledge about this stunning heaven, the Galápagos Islands, and it is great to do it by visiting one of the best locations on Española Island. Punta Suarez is situated on the western side of the island where almost all the fauna is concentrated, and it gives us a wonderful and surprising opportunity to see evidence of the high percentage of endemism in the archipelago.

From the very first instant we set foot on the concrete jetty at Punta Suarez, we saw the welcoming committee: sea lions, lava lizards, marine iguanas, crabs, Hood mockingbirds, two Galápagos hawks, blue-footed boobies, and more. As soon as we started to hike we realized that in every direction that we looked an animal was present. It is hard to believe how a life form that started out looking absolutely different thousands years ago can still exist here in a changed form. Through adaptations that have allowed them to continue to exist, the original animals are still here, yet changed. We were eyewitness to that extraordinary result of survival. We cannot forget to mention the waved albatrosses, such fascinating creatures, graceful and unique to the island.

In the afternoon we did diverse water activities, such as deep water snorkeling, glass bottom boat outings, kayaking, and snorkeling for beginners. On the beautiful coralline white sand beach our guests were surrounded by those playful marine mammals known as sea lions, and those birds who inspect our belongings, the Hood mockingbird. On the glass bottom boat we spotted several species of colorful tropical fish, and also different kinds of sea stars.

This lovely day is fading in time, and will never come back. We are hoping to continue our incredible experiences tomorrow.
