Bartolomé & Santiago Islands

We started today disembarking on the desolate shore of a barren little island, Bartolomé. With a a lot of enthusiasm we climbed 372 steps up to the summit of this volcanic island, pre-breakfast. The most dramatic landscape surrounded us. Impressive lava flows, spatter cones, volcanic ash, lava tubes, and other volcanic amenities were admired. Breathless but fearless we conquered the summit and the reward was one of the most spectacular views in the entire archipelago. We were back on board for our official breakfast and after it we were ready again to continue our adventure. This time we headed to a golden beach were we spent a delightful morning. We all were involved in many activities. Swimming and snorkeling were very successful for several of us had the thrill of seeing Galápagos penguins. Sand castle building and the ritual burying of a Lindblad Expeditions Naturalist were activities experienced by our youngest guests this week.

We spent our afternoon around Santiago Island, disembarking on a black sand beach. A final hike for our expedition took place through the lava and boulder fields along the shoreline. The trail lead us to meet a colony of fur seals by the “grottos”. We came back onboard the ship accompanied by the last rays of sunlight. Our expedition will be ending tomorrow, but our memories will last forever.
