Floreana Island
In the early hours of the day and before breakfast, we went ashore to explore an ancient place where whalers placed a wooden barrel. This was their only connection with the rest of the world; we followed their tradition, just like those whalers, we looked inside that wooden barrel, and after reading the addresses, we took those that go close to our homes to be hand delivered. Several of the letters were just left yesterday, while others are waiting to be collected personally.
Right after this fun experience, we were delighted by the presence of four Galápagos penguins, a small group of blue footed boobies and a couple of pelicans; all of them were fishing around the same area. Later on we headed towards Champion islet, which was our snorkeling place. The area around this islet is surrounded by currents which are incredibly rich in nutrients; the amount and diversity of species of fish was overwhelming. A few curious Galápagos sea lions approached us and joined us in the fun of swimming and playing. It was also a great chance for us to go on the glass bottom boat, and to have a great time looking for birds along the coasts of Champion.
After all the many options this morning, we navigated towards “Cormorant Point” for our afternoon activities. There and once we anchored, we got on to our kayaks and explored the coast. There were some green sea turtles, sea lions and red billed tropic birds all around the protected bay on “Cormorant Point”. We went later on for a magnificent walk where we found greater flamingoes and some of their juveniles. This was a great opportunity to see one of the most important nesting sites for pacific green sea turtles. We even saw a few turtles and sting rays close to the shore on the other side of “Cormorant Point”. This place has one of the most magnificent beaches on the archipelago; no doubt turtles love to nest here.
We ended our day with a spectacular sunset that brought all the glorious moments we had today in this paradise.
