Cascade Creek, Petersburg & Frederick Sound

California weather today! We awoke to clear blue skies in Thomas Bay, Patterson Glacier and snow covered peaks surrounded our views. Soon we are on our way to Cascade Creek… a fantastic “stairway to heaven” hike up a boardwalk and lots of stairs, 191 to be exact, to the overlook.

Back aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird, we traveled down Fredrick Sound to Petersburg, a small fishing town with a very obvious Norwegian heritage. The day was perfect for sightseeing by plane or bike or on foot… crystal blue skies with not a cloud in sight! Several decided to ride bikes around town and a muskeg walk was also offered.

The evening began with Dr. Fred Sharp from the Alaska Whale Foundation giving a presentation about his research studying humpback whale communication and behavior. After recap, we had a very filling crab feast! Fresh crab from Petersburg! No time for dessert… humpback whales were feeding all around us! Whales were fluking in the brilliant sunset! Dr. Scott Pearson from Stanford University read to us a bedtime story from White Fang by Jack Lennon, a perfect ending to a wonderful sun drenched day!
