Glacier Bay National Park

“Today was a celebration of magic.” BLK.

Spending the entire day in Glacier Bay National Park with no wind, sunny skies, massive mountains, and spectacular wildlife could be one of the best days ever. From sunrise to sunset, we were glued to the bow, cameras and binoculars at the ready. The scenic views were endless, the glaciers massive and dynamic, and the wildlife varied and stunning. On days like this, one wishes that the sun would never set.

Starting off early in Johns Hopkins Inlet and ending at Bartlett Cove, we had incredible vistas. From early views of the mountains of Orville and Wilbur, to the 15,300-foot Mt. Fairweather towering high above, we were surrounded by snow-covered peaks. We visited multiple glaciers today, including spending quality time in front of Margerie Glacier that did multiple calvings. Glassy reflections were a theme for the day, and they were included in the thousands of images taken today.

The wildlife of Glacier Bay is incredible, and we were rewarded with so many different sightings today. Starting with a mother bear and three cubs and ending with lots of puffins and sea lions, the megafauna was incredible today. Mountain goats, a lone wolf, sea otters, and porpoises were enjoyed, but for me the coup de grâce, were the killer whales. A group of at least ten transient killer whales were magnificent. Orcas in glassy water with reflections and the snow covered mountain scenery; I don’t think it could have gotten any better.

Magic surrounded us all day.
