Bahia Magdalena
A calm night was behind us. At sunrise we enjoyed an incredible dawn, due to the gray clouds above us, clouds of rain. A cool wind made the frigates and cormorants fly a little harder, as they separated and flew off to their daily feeding grounds. After breakfast, we immediately set out to our different plans: some of us went off to Isla Magdalena to hike around the dunes, and promptly became wet as the desert offered us a rain squall. The light brown dunes became darker, the plants wet. Life was fresh and vibrant, as we began our walk into the desert. Three jackrabbits were seen to take off like bullets, with straight up ears, and a coyote approached us shamelessly!
Meanwhile the Zodiacs were starting to take different groups of guests to enjoy the whales. At this time females have their calves very near them, and are forcing them to exercise as much as possible. The whales were seen to spy-hop, and come up to breathe constantly. Two different rounds were organized, and lunchtime came up. After this repast, we immediately set out again to watch the whales. Many birds were seen during this day, especially magnificent frigate birds, cormorants, brown pelicans, and terns.
Later in the afternoon we had a Mexican fiesta aboard, with the “Coyotes of Magdalena” giving us a good number of Mexican songs. And, of course, a good Mexican dinner!
