Golfo Dulce

Golfo Dulce, where Toucans and Macaws decorate the Rain Forest. This morning the minute we poked our heads out of our Cabins and saw the calm emerald waters of Golfo Dulce, with spectacular Jungles in the background, we knew we were up for something special, Costa Rican coffee and a great Breakfast filled us with the energy that we needed to enjoy this beautiful paradise.

We started the day with a visit to the Botanical Gardens of Casa Orquidea, a secret place that has no road access and is filled with the most incredible tropical plants. They are the product of 30 years of plant searching and patient gardening. We divided into small groups, each with a Naturalist who searched and explained about the different plants, birds and animals found on the trails.

At the Gardens many cameras pointed at an endless source of colorful flowers such as Orquids, Heliconias, Anthuriums and Costus. Other guests admired the different plants including some of the tropical edible plants and fruits, and of course there where many of us looking for birds. As we enjoyed the Gardens our guides started screaming Toucan, Toucan!!!!! Or Macaws, Macaws!!!!! As all of us were trying to find these incredible birds to take a picture and admire them.

The afternoon was full of action. We visited the mangrove forest of Rio Esquinas, where many kayaks were ready on shore waiting for a group of adventurers to explore the extensive mangrove. Others explored on Zodiacs, as we moved through this incredible ecosystem. We saw a great number of birds such as: Parrots, egrets, Ibis, herons, Guans, Kingfishers and Caciques, as well as several reptiles. We learned about the area’s wildlife and their function and importance in this incredible ecosystem.

At the end of the day there was only satisfaction and great expectation for our next adventure…
