The Columbia River

This morning begins our first full day onboard the National Geographic Sea Lion. Many of us have traveled great distances to partake in this exciting expedition. We are anxious to become steeped in the experiences of the voyage. The wondrous landscape that surrounds us evokes a sense of connectedness. Many of us gather for the morning stretch class, and allow ourselves to be transformed as we cruise up the Columbia River; Oregon on the starboard side, Washington on the port side. What a vision!

Later on, many of us take the opportunity to reflect on the trials and tribulations of Lewis and Clark by attending the presentation entitled “The Lewis and Clark Expedition”. Others are engaged in reading as they soak in the sun on deck or taking the opportunity to for a LEX spa treatment.

This afternoon we continued to navigate this wondrous river. We passed through several locks viewing their adjacent hydroelectric dams. We were fascinated by the operations throughout these passages. Equally, we were enthralled with the curious landscape before us; we were educated on the vertical rock columns known as basalt and rolling flatlands of the Palouse region. Western grebes, double-crested cormorants and a great blue heron are among the birds we observed along our river ascent. Later we attend the presentation entitled “The Flora and Fauna of the Expedition” which compliments the afternoon’s observations perfectly.

While gathering in the lounge this evening for a delightful wine and seafood tasting, we transitioned onto the Snake River. Our enthusiasm and anticipation builds as we contemplate tomorrow’s explorations.
