Milford Sound

We began our sea journey today in the steep-sided Milford Sound, New Zealand’s most vertical fiord. The distinctive shape of Mitre Peak presides over this narrow waterway, reaching a height of 5499 feet (1692m). Its iconic, conical shape is perhaps New Zealand’s most photographed feature. For most visitors, Milford Sound is literally the end of the road, but for us it is just the beginning. We transferred out to the Oceanic Discoverer in sunny, blustery conditions, and settled into our new home. Our leisurely departure took us past the nearly perpendicular cliffs and waterfalls that are a hallmark of this fiord.
