Sifnos, Cyclades Islands, Greece
The deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea and the gentle warm breezes were our greeting as we walked out on deck this morning, our first day aboard the Panorama. To appropriately welcome us to this paradise, Tom, our Expedition Leader, arranged a morning at anchor in Vathy Bay. Here we all participated in a variety of water sports. We kayaked, swam, dove, jumped and floated for over two hours in the buoyant salty surroundings.
In mid-afternoon we repositioned to the harbor at Kamares to go ashore and explore the towns of Kastro and Apollonia. Kastro gave us a glimpse of a typical Cycladic village. White washed buildings were connected by narrow passageways and winding stairways. The blue doorways, colorful flowers and lounging local kitties made for excellent photo opportunities. Later in the afternoon some of the group visited a pottery factory and made their own creations as well.
At least one poem was inspired by the day and is shared below.
Sifnos
Silent voices speak of ancient time;
Walls crumble slowly in the sun of mid-day
The potter’s wheel spins endlessly;
As the wine-dark sea carries the visitors away.
