Naxos, Cyclades Islands, Greece

This evening as we walked the waterfront in Naxos we enjoyed a gift from the god of wind. This was definitely a night for Aeolus. We have had very calm seas for most of our trip, making it unique to walk outside at night and feel the wind again. It was reminiscent of the breezes that blow when summer turns to fall. Except that this breeze was warm and comfortable, still warm enough for an evening stroll to a gelato shop!

Our morning was spent sailing across the open sea between the Dodecanese Islands and the Cycladic Islands. It was quite a ride! Several of us reveled in the wind and the spray on the bow and the outer decks as the Panorama rode the waves. Others chose to "sleep in" and ponder the ride from a more horizontal aspect.

We arrived in Naxos after lunch. Here we docked on the west end of town with a beautiful view to the Portara (Gate) at the Temple of Apollo. In mid-afternoon we explored the Kastro (Castle) with Vicky and Stella. The old town was built around an even older castle that was built in 1207. The medieval13th century gate still has stories to tell. To this day, it still has a meter long groove in the marble beside it. This was the way the Venetians measured fabric to sell. This was just one of the doorways, entry ways and winding corridors to take photos this afternoon. After learning about local foods like octopus and citron, we wandered the waterfront to sample another delicacy – homemade gelato.

Later in the day some of us walked to the gate to watch the glowing orange sun sink into the sea. Others gathered on the deck of the Panorama with an equally beautiful view of the sunset. Apollo completed another journey across the sky!
