Skhoinousa

Skhoinousa, a small island in the Cyclades was our refuge for the day from the strong winds. Like the other unplanned adventures of the trip, this was a special treat. It was as peaceful and relaxing as it looked. With the largest town on the island having only 250 people, we got to see the quiet side of the Greek islands, and we loved it. All in the space of one day, we walked down to the town beach, kayaked out to the point, and swam in the viridian waters. Near the beach, a sea captain and patron of the arts had built a vineyard and outdoor theater where he stages festivals.

After lunch we walked around the upper town with its dramatic vistas of the harbor. Down one hill was the first windmill I got to photograph that had vanes. Then I rounded out the day by catching the second Zodiac shuttle to the beach around the point which was bigger than the morning’s with more people and beach loungers. I finally sat still long enough to get some tan.

After a windy voyage we arrived in Syros where we walked the quay admiring the boats and marveling how late the people were socializing and hanging out in the cafes. Arriving back the ship at 12:30 a.m., we had the distinction of being the only passengers with black tags left showing.
