Syros

Last day of the cruise and our last port was Syros, the capital of the Cyclades. What a surprise! Who could believe, seeing Ermoupolis that we are still in the Cyclades. Ermoupolis is a fascinating city that flourished in the 19th century as a commercial centre and a refueling port for steam ships. The city has fabulous architecture. Large neo-classical mansions impress the visitor with their size and luxury, lived in them and their high standard of living.

The public buildings show power this place once had. The elegant theater is a miniature scala di Milan and great European and Greek actors performed here. The sophisticated life style and high intellectual level is evident wherever you turn.

We walked through the colorful market where we enjoyed the fresh fruits, sausages, local cheeses, capers and other products. We tried the famous Syros ‘loukoumi’ that they sell everywhere along the waterfront, sat in the square and enjoyed a Greek coffee.

Syros was a different experience. No antiquities although the island has a significant ancient past, but it was more fascinating discovering the modern equivalent of Delos.  At noon we set sail for marina Zea, the final destination of our cruise. On the way we stopped for the last swim and before sunset for the beautiful view of the Temple of Apollo. This was very nice and relaxing afternoon and evening.
