Poliegos and Milos Islands
After enjoying our swim and dinner at Cape Sounion, we allowed our imaginations to fly away to the Aegean as we were looking at the illuminated Temple of Poseidon. A week on the Aegean was about to begin. Soon after we went to bed, we heard the engines starting, and before we knew it, we were on our way!
Early in the morning we arrived in a beautiful bay with turquoise waters across from the island of Milos. We were at the uninhabited island of Poliegos, which means “the island with many goats.” People from Milos and the neighboring Kimolos used to leave their flocks there, so they could be free. Today the number of goats is small. Everybody enjoyed the wonderful waters and they also had a chance to have a kayak race!
After lunch we sailed to Milos and our buses were waiting for our excursion. It didn’t take long to realize that Milos was formed after some volcanic activity. The stones around had so many different colors. Our first stop was in the strange rock formation which was called Sarakiniko, and it was completely white! We heard that kaolin was the reason of that unusual white. The Saracen pirates have used this place to hide and it was named after them. The rocks were coming down to the sea and the contrast was very impressive.
After taking many pictures, we continued to the site of the ancient city, where the famous statue of the Venus de Milo was found. We actually saw the exact place where the statue was discovered. Today it is in the Louvre. We also saw the ruins of a small Roman theater and the remains of the walls of the city.
After this visit, our buses took us to the main town of the island, Plaka. We had time to explore it, visit the little shops and see the “labyrinth” that the narrow streets are forming. Nobody could resist the ice cream or the sweets of the pastry shop at the entrance of the little town! We spent the rest of the evening in the port of Adamas, where the Panorama was docked, and after dinner we walked around in the busy, noisy little place. We were ready to move to the next island!
