Milos & Poliegos Islands

We must have done the proper sacrifice to Poseidon because our journey to Milos through the night was not as rough as we had anticipated. While everyone else was enjoying the opportunity to sleep in, I snuck to the front and watched the sun rise as we sailed into Milos. We all enjoyed a slow morning, with a later breakfast and were rested up for our excursion into Milos.

We boarded our buses and headed to three different stops. Our first stop took us to Sarakiniko, with its white volcanic pumice landscape that feels like walking on the moon. We were all like great explorers discovering new corners of the area that I had never seen before. Scaling the pumice walls to look deep into the giant caves below where we could hear the water crashing into the rocks below. Some of us adventured even farther and found a shipwreck with its rusted mast protruding from the water.

After much exploration we headed back to the buses for our next destination, Tripiti. On the bus ride over we heard the story of how Aphrodite became the Goddess of Beauty from our incredible storyteller and guide Sophia. It laid the foundation for the next story on the site about the discovery of the “Venus de Milo” (the famous statue of Aphrodite). At the same site, we also visited an ancient theater, not as large and intact as Epidaurus, yet still amazing. Our final stop of the morning took us to the village center of Plaka. Here we saw amazing views, a beautiful church with intricate stone mosaics surrounding it, and enjoyed some shopping and gelato. It’s hard to believe that we fit so many wonderful sites into our perfect morning.

After lunch on the ship we set sail. It was a short trek to our beach stop in Poliegos. The younger guests all put on their swim suits and lined up along the bow of the ship to catch the waves and spray of the sea and then everyone enjoyed the captain raising the sails. It was so beautiful to lie on the deck and soak up some sun while we sailed in the Aegean. Everyone enjoyed a late afternoon swim, where we collected shells and explored the pumice island a bit, spending just enough time to work up an appetite for another delicious dinner. It really was an amazing day.
