Santiago Island

This week we have seen everything imaginable and even a couple things that were completely unimaginable! These included whale sharks, killer whales and the terrifying vampire finch. So, we have a lot to remember from this trip. The kids who are on board with us this week found a wonderful way to mark these many special experiences in their memories.

As seen in this photo, they were explaining to one of the ship’s officers (not, of course, the one who was on duty at that time) that a simple string of beads could help them do the job. First, you make a knot, then look for a bead that helps you recall a sighting or an experience. For example, a red bead might help you remember the Sally lightfoot crabs or a green one, a special cactus. Add as many as you can to recount your daily experiences in the Galapagos. You end up with the most beautiful necklace you’ve ever seen!

Our officers found it so strikingly useful that they are considering using the “memory necklace” system to help them recall navigation positions!
